Police in Homa Bay County have seized 2,353 rolls of cannabis sativa and arrested one suspect in a renewed anti-narcotics operation aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks along the lakeside region.
The arrest was made following a routine patrol by officers from Kendubay Police Station, who acted on a tip-off from members of the public regarding suspected drug trafficking activities at Achuodho Beach.
According to police, the information indicated that a tuk-tuk believed to be ferrying bhang had been spotted offloading several sacks at a rental house in the area.
Officers responded swiftly to the report and moved to the identified premises, where they conducted a search.
During the operation, police recovered four sacks containing cannabis sativa suspected to have been prepared for illegal distribution.
Preliminary assessments indicated that the haul amounted to 2,353 rolls of bhang, highlighting the scale of the suspected trafficking operation.
The suspect found at the premises was arrested and taken into custody for processing ahead of arraignment in court.
The recovered narcotics were secured at Kendubay Police Station as investigations continue to establish the source of the drugs and identify other individuals who may be linked to the operation.
Police said the seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to curb the trafficking and abuse of narcotics in Homa Bay County, particularly in beach and transport corridors that are increasingly being exploited by criminal networks.
“The swift response by officers, coupled with actionable intelligence from the public, led to the successful recovery of the narcotics and the arrest of the suspect,” police said in a brief statement.
The National Police Service (NPS) lauded both the officers involved and members of the public for their role in the operation, noting that community cooperation remains critical in the fight against illicit drugs.
Drug abuse has been cited as a growing concern in parts of Homa Bay County, with authorities linking the trade to rising cases of insecurity, school dropouts, and health-related challenges among the youth.
Law enforcement agencies have in recent months stepped up patrols and intelligence-led operations in hotspot areas, including beaches, markets, and transport hubs.
Police reiterated their commitment to sustaining the crackdown on drug trafficking and urged residents to continue sharing information that could help disrupt criminal activities.
“We call upon members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through established channels,” the statement said.
The suspect is expected to be presented in court once investigations are completed, as police pursue further leads to dismantle the wider network behind the seized consignment.
